This illustration shows the “baby soothing syrups” on the table are clearly labeled “paregoric” and “Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup.” Their use as a focal point in a political cartoon indicates that they were well known and widely used. Effective, but addictive, these drugs became a key target for food and drug reformers in the late nineteenth century.
