On Nov. 14, 2007, the BP Energy Biosciences Institute was established with a $500 million ten year grant to a consortium including researchers at the QB3 facility at the University of California, Berkeley, the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley Lab in Berkeley, the Joint Genome Institute in Walnut Creek, and the University of Illinois which will provide agricultural support.

In 2015, EBI’s mission expanded to encompass renewable energy, green chemistry, advanced separations, circularity, H2 supply chains, nature-based solutions, and advanced energy generation, storage, and transformation.

To date, EBI has successfully raised $400 million to support more than 75 programs, benefiting approximately 1,000 researchers. Their initiatives have led to over 100 patent applications and generated more than 1,500 citations in peer-reviewed journals. Since launching our business incubator, the companies hosted have collectively raised over $75 million.
