On Sep. 26, 1918, Boston’s health commissioner Dr. William C. Woodward issued a closure order for theaters, movie houses, and dance halls, and issued curfews for public gatherings. Church closure decisions were left to clergy.
By Sep. 16, hundreds of influenza cases in the city had been reported, causing overcrowding in both City Hospital as well as Massachusetts General with 19 deaths.
