On Jun. 9, 2016, BC Children’s Hospital and the University of British Columbia (UBC) researchers announced that they had discovered precise genetic or biochemical defects in a number of intellectual disabilities, opening up potential treatments.

Whole-exome sequencing has transformed gene discovery and diagnosis in rare diseases. Translation into disease-modifying treatments is challenging, particularly for intellectual developmental disorder. The study results were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
