, ,

In 1852, Adolphe Chatin, a French chemist, was the first to publish the hypothesis of population iodine deficiency associated with endemic goiter.

This was confirmed by Eugen Baumann, who, in 1896, reported the discovery of iodine within the thyroid gland. Iodine is a micronutrient required for thyroid hormone production.
