In 1947, the Southeastern Michigan Division of the American Cancer Society created the Michigan Cancer Foundation to comply with a policy that prohibited local chapters from owning property or operating medical clinics and scientific laboratories.

The American Cancer Society deeded all property titles to the Michigan Cancer Foundation, which is a nonprofit corporation.
