The Eli and Edythe Broad CIRM Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research opened
On Oct. 29, 2010, The Eli and Edythe Broad CIRM Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research opened.
The center was established in 2006 with a gift from Eli and Edythe Broad, and support from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine USC’s stem cell research center will host world-class scientists who are harnessing the power of stem cell biology to treat neurodegeneration; hearing loss; blood, heart and kidney disease; osteoarthritis and bone fractures; and cancer.
Construction of the $80 million, five-story, 87,500-square foot, “green”-certified building housed 180 researchers conducting research that could be the key to cures for devastating diseases such as Parkinson’s, age-related macular degeneration, Alzheimer’s, diabetes and Huntington’s, as well as regeneration of damaged skin, heart muscles, and organs.
