On Dec. 3, 2009, the Thai HIV vaccine clinical trial results were published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The trial, which combined two vaccines that failed on their own, was conducted over the course of 24 weeks starting in October 2003.

The initial report showed the rate of HIV infection among volunteers who received the vaccine was 31% lower than the rate of HIV infection in volunteers who received the placebo.
