The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced grants totaling $258 million to develop a malaria vaccine

On Oct. 30, 2005, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation announced three grants totaling $258.3 million for advanced development of a malaria vaccine, new drugs, and innovative mosquito control methods to help defeat malaria, a disease that kills 2,000 African children every day.

The three grants included: $107.6 million to the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative; $100 million to the Medicines for Malaria Venture; and $50.7 million to the Innovative Vector Control Consortium (IVCC), led by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
