On Oct. 10, 2002, the Oregon Opportunity arrived as Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) broke ground for a new biomedical research building. The 260,000-square-foot facility was the first step in the university’s new research recruitment and expansion effort dubbed The Oregon Opportunity.

Construction of the new research and patient care buildings were possible because of the investment of The Oregon Opportunity funds in OHSU. The Oregon Opportunity involved a voter-approved state investment of $200 million and a private $300 million fundraising effort.
