On Oct. 27, 1992, the CDC was officially renamed Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, retraining its initials at the request of the U.S. Congress.

In making this change, and acknowledging CDC’s responsibility for “addressing illness and disability before they occur,” Congress specified that the agency should continue to be recognized by the acronym “CDC.”
