The Area Health Education Centers program was established at OHSU
In 1989, the Area Health Education Centers program was established with funding from the Oregon Legislature and later the federal government, to promote better access to adequate health care and to facilitate medical student primary care clerkships.
The Area Health Education Centers (AHEC’s) are the result of a grass roots effort by Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) and communities across the state to address the shortage of healthcare professionals in rural and undeserved Oregon.
