The Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research was created within the FDA
On Oct. 6, 1987, the Center for Drugs and Biologics within the U.S. Food and Drug Administration was split into the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research and the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER).
This split was necessary because of the increasing volume of New Drug Applications, to provide proper high-level attention to the growing problem of AIDS, and to address other issues in drug and biologic evaluation.
