In 1981, Dr. Alexa Canady became the first African American woman in the U.S. to become a neurosurgeon, at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
Dr. Canady was chief of neurosurgery at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan from 1987 until her retirement in June 2001.
