In 1970, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) was founded under the National Academy of Science charter. as an independent, nonprofit organization that worked outside of government to provide unbiased and authoritative advice to decision makers and the public.

Now, the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) is one of three academies that make up the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (the National Academies) in the United States.
