On Apr. 1, 1964 Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, a psychoactive substance found in the cannabis plant, was isolated by Yehiel Gaoni and Raphael Mechoulam. The discovery of its compounds led to the further discovery of an important neurotransmitter system called the endocannabinoid system.
