In 1950, Dorland J. Davis and Margaret Pittman identified the causative organism (Koch-Weeks bacillus) of epidemic bacterial conjunctivitis. Known as Hemophilus aegyptius, it occurs in warm climates only during the breeding seasons of the gnat (or the “eye” fly). They found that zinc sulfate and streptomycin were curative.
