In 1942, influenza A/B vaccine was introduced to the Armed Forces Epidemiological Board. The vaccine was effective against both influenza A and B that was successfully used to protect the U.S. military forces during World War II and directly saved more than 1 million lives.

The influenza vaccine was licensed in 1945 and, following the war, was also used for civilians.
