In 1933, Thomas Hunt Morgan was was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his chromosome theory of heredity.  Morgan pioneered the new science of genetics through experimental research with the fruit fly (Drosophila), laying the foundations for the future of biology.

On the basis of fly-breeding experiments he demonstrated that genes are linked in a series on chromosomes and that they determine indentifiable, hereditary traits.
