The University of Iowa Hospital was opened

,

In 1898, the University of Iowa opened a new 65-bed hospital, built on the same site of the previous hospital, on the east side of the river, in 1885.

The most impressive feature of this institution was a 200-seat amphitheater for clinical instruction. The University Hospital was the first university teaching hospital west of the Mississippi river.
