First African-American woman licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina
In 1897, Matilda Evans, M.D became the first African-American woman licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina.
In 1893, Evans enrolled at the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania and received her M.D. in 1897. Following graduation, she returned to her home state of South Carolina and established a medical practice.
