Deaconess Hospital was founded
In 1896 as part of their missionary charter, Methodist deaconesses founded Deaconess Hospital to care for the city’s residents, and in 1916, Beth Israel Hospital was established by the Boston Jewish community to meet the needs of the growing immigrant population.
Today, BIDMC is one of the three major teaching hospitals affiliated with Harvard Medical School, and is renowned for excellence in surgery, and treatment of cardiac conditions, cancer, and pulmonary and thoracic disorders; and expertise in neurosciences, gastroenterology and liver disease, obstetrics and women’s health, podiatry, and emergency and trauma medicine.
