The first open heart surgery on a person was successfully performed
On Jul. 9, 1893, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, an African-American cardiologist, was the founder of Provident Hospital, the first non-segregated hospital in the U.S.
On July 9, 1893 when a young man named James Cornish entered the Hospital with chest stab wounds, Dr. Williams performed a new type of surgery to repair a tear in the heart lining, saving his life.
