In 1891, the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College’s first master of science degree was awarded to Charles N. McBryde, son of President John M. McBryde who introduced graduate study to the school.

Charles McBryde was one of the discoverers of a serum for the prevention of hog cholera that saved untold millions of dollars.
