In 1891, Throop University (Caltech) was founded in 1891 by Pasadena philanthropist Amos Throop, and under the guidance of astronomer George Ellery Hale, the first director of the Mount Wilson Observatory, it was transformed into a leading institution for engineering and scientific research and education.
