The Hatch Act established the national system of agricultural research experiment stations

In 1887, the Hatch Act, written by Seaman Knapp and Charles Bessey on the faculty at Iowa Agricultural College (Iowa State University), established the national system of agricultural research experiment stations.

The Hatch Act, revised in 1955, states that experiment stations should, “conduct original and other research, investigations and experiments bearing directly on and contributing to the establishment and maintenance of a permanent and effective agricultural industry. . . “
