University of Alabama’s Medical College branch opened in Mobile

In 1859, the University of Alabama’s Medical College branch opened in Mobile.

In 1820, the University of the State of Alabama was officially established and named. In 1818, the federal government authorized Alabama Territory to set aside a township for the establishment of a “seminary of learning.”

Tuscaloosa was chosen as the University’s home in 1827 and the University opened in 1831 with 52 students.
