In 1854, Dr. John Snow, an English physician, tracked individual incidents of colera in London to water well; he removed the pump handle and the outbreak stopped.
Snow, considered a father of modern epidemiology, used a map to illustrate the cluster of cholera cases around the pump, and statistics to illustrate the connection between the quality of the water source and cholera cases.
