John K Smith opened a drugstore in Philadelphia (GlaxoSmithKline)

In 1830, John K .Smith opened his first drugstore in Philadelphia, and was soon joined by his younger brother to form John K. Smith & Co. — now known as GlaxoSmithKline.

In 1865, Mahlon Kline joins Smith as a bookkeeper, and as he assumed additional responsibilities he was rewarded in 1875 when the company was renamed Smith, Kline & Company.
