The University of the State of Alabama (University of Alabama) was established

On Dec. 18, 1820, the University of the State of Alabama was officially established and named. In 1818, the federal government authorized Alabama Territory to set aside a township for the establishment of a “seminary of learning.”

Tuscaloosa was chosen as the University’s home in 1827 and the University opened in 1831 with 52 students.
