Oregon confirmed first human case of highly pathogenic avian influenza
On Nov. 15, 2024, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed a highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in an individual linked to a previously reported outbreak affecting birds at a commercial poultry operation in Clackamas County, Oregon. There was no evidence of person-to-person transmission and the risk to the public was low.
The person received treatment with the antiviral medication oseltamivir, and household contacts were prescribed oseltamivir prophylaxis. The patient’s illness was linked to an outbreak at a commercial poultry farm in Clackamas County confirmed on October 24 that involved a facility that housed 150,000 birds.
