Patent Medicine Politics
This illustration shows the “baby soothing syrups” on the table are clearly labeled “paregoric” and “Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup.” Their use as a focal point in a political cartoon indicates that they were well known and widely used. Effective, but addictive, these drugs became a key target for food and drug reformers in the late nineteenth century.
This cartoon from the Washington Post, shows Grover Cleveland’s preparations for the presidential race in 1892 required him to remain calm and “close the window” on some distracting issues. Published: October, 1891.
